Global tourism passed the one billion count last year and 2013 should be an even better year for travel.
Skift has compiled a list of data on the performance of the tourism industry in 2013 from various publications:
Greece hosted 17.7 million tourists in 2013, a 10% increase from 2012, making 2013 their best year ever.
Thailand had 26.72 million tourists visit the region in 2013, an estimated increase of 13.29% from 2012. This greatly surpassed their expectations and the region projects 30.27 million tourists will visit in 2014.
The Vatican saw a significant increase (186%) in tourists in 2013 (including me!), which Reuters attributes to the popularity of Pope Francis. The figures are based on the number of ticket sales for papal events; in 2012, there were 2.3 million ticket sales, and there were 6.6 million tickets soldin 2013.
